Tips for Copyediting/Proofreading Hard Copy

• Work in a quiet place with a minimum of interruptions.

• Find good light to work under. Natural outside light is best.

• Check overall visual layout first.

• Before reading text, check titles, subtitles, and captions.

• Read word for word for basic line editing.

• Read aloud for unclear parts to yourself or to someone else.

• Keep reference materials handy.

• Take your time.

• Mark errors in the margins.

• Use standard copyeditor’s marks.

• Keep track of errors made repeatedly.

• Rest your eyes every 15 to 20 minute by at least looking away from the page.

• Take frequent stretch breaks.

• Set the page at a 30-degree angle to take stress off your neck and back.
